Prompt #30 Pride is the worst of all sins.
In Mere Christianity C.S. Lewis claims that pride is the worst sin. Lewis outright states in “The Great Sin” that, “As long as you are proud you cannot know God.” This is a very bold statement he is making since every Christian has been prideful at some point in their life. I do not believe that when you are in a proud state you are completely separated from God. Rather, you have temporarily turned away from Him but He is still there hoping you abandon your pride and turn your focus back on Him. The Bible clearly states that once you have accepted Christ/are in Christ you can never be separated from God. While Pride does hinder a person from being in full fellowship with God, it does not utterly destroy that relationship with God. This is why I personally believe pride is not the worst sin; it can be overcome with help from God. Other sins however cannot be overcome if someone does not have Christ in their life in which case they would be committing a worse sin by rejecting Christ.
Pride is everywhere in society today but a major place I notice it in is sports. Athletes everywhere are talking it up on how good their team is or how weak their opponent is. I do not view this as being completely wrong because it is good to go into a competition with some pride and an attitude of wanting to win. That should be the way every team approaches a competition no matter their skill. As far as pride being the worst sin they can commit I think it is far worse when athletes abuse their popularity. They go take drugs such as steroids, waste their money or just do stupid things without thinking before they act. They do not realize that these acts are having such a negative impact on society since they are role models, especially to kids. It is far worse to be a terrible role model than prideful over your skills, talent or popularity. This should be evidence enough that while pride is something that needs to be dealt with, there are far greater sins that need to be confronted first.
